Introit                  The Presentation of Christ in the temple  J. Eccard (1598)

Reading               Malachi 3: 1-4

I will send my messenger, who will prepare the way before me. Then suddenly the Lord you are seeking will come to his temple; the messenger of the covenant, whom you desire, will come,” says the Lord Almighty.

But who can endure the day of his coming? Who can stand when he appears? For he will be like a refiner’s fire or a launderer’s soap. He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver; he will purify the Levites and refine them like gold and silver. Then the Lord will have men who will bring offerings in righteousness,and the offerings of Judah and Jerusalem will be acceptable to the Lord, as in days gone by, as in former years.

Psalm                  Psalm 27: 1-7 by  J. L. Hopkins

The prayers were followed by Stanford’s arrangement of Nunc Dimmittis after whgich the congregation joined us singing Christ Is Made The Sure Foundation

1

Christ is made the sure foundation,

Christ the head and cornerstone;

Chosen of the Lord and precious,

Binding all the church in one;

Holy Zion’s help forever,

And her confidence alone.

3

Here vouchsafe to all Thy servants

What they ask of Thee to gain;

What they gain from Thee forever

With the blessed to retain,

And hereafter in Thy glory

Evermore with Thee to reign.

2

To this temple, where we call Thee,

Come, O Lord of Hosts, today!

With Thy faithful loving-kindness

Hear Thy people as they pray,

And Thy fullest benediction

Shed within its walls alway.

4

Laud and honour to the Father,

Laud and honour to the Son,

Laud and honour to the Spirit,

Ever Three and ever One;

One in might and one in glory,

While unending ages run.
